Film Trailer Research
Today i started to research film trailers from the website youtube. I have put some examples of urban film trailers that have taught me alot about how different countries all over the films will have different styles for their films. I also learnt alot about the Mise on scene of a stereotypical urban environment; such as poor living conditions, youth, weapons and crime. However they all also show how all the stories are of good people trying to survive in a harsh environment. This information will be very important to my trailer when creating the plot and choosing mise on scene.
I have analysed the trailer for the film 'Bullet Boy'. This is what I found out;
Genre: Urban Crime/Drama
Narrative: Bullet Boy follows the progress of Londoner Ricky freshly released jail trying to keep the peace between his best friend and a gang. The trouble starts when Ricky's best friend 'Wisdom' accidentally takes of a wing mirror of a gangs car, they begin to fight but Ricky splits them up. Wisdom is frustrated as the gang spread that Wisdom is a coward the by gang leader 'Godfrey'. Wisdom and Godfrey try to kill each other before while Ricky struggles to keep the peace in the trouble he has been dragged into the middle of.
Unique Selling Point: The film has won a place at 'the official selection film festival'
at both London and Toronto. Also the film is screening while Britain is struggling with Young people in council estates raising gun and knife crimes so many people will be able to relate to some of the characters.
Target Audience: The film is rated an 18, so its aimed at adults.
Music: Music is slow and solemn from beginning to end to set the scene and tone of the film.
Shot Types/Camera Angles: Camera uses mostly Mid-shots and uses over the shoulder shots with two shots during conversations. However in opening scene with the riot police a handheld camera is used to make the audience feel they are there. There is also High angle shots in the moments where Ricky's younger brother 'Curtis' is in to make him look smaller and younger.
Pace: Starts quite fast in the riot police scene but after that the pace is slow matching the music.
Dialogue: There is not alot of dialogue so the audience is not given alot of information about the plot of the film but they are given a small look into the characters. For example Ricky is telling Wisdom to leave the estate because he want to keep the peace; and little brother Curtis is caring and worried about his older brothers criminal record.
Voice over: There was no voice over.
Special Effects: There was no Special Effects.
Credits and inter titles: The trailer opens with an intertidal of the films institution 'Verve pictures'. During the trailer there is many flattering quotes from respected film critics such as 'Mesmerising' by the observer and 'Striking' from The Times. The trailer shows the audience what the film has won such as a place at 'the official selection film festival' at both London and Toronto, as well as a Best British independent film award for leading actor Ashley Walters. At the end of the trailer the film name appears on the screen, then it tells us who the music used in the trailer was by, followed by the release date. There is not credits to the trailer.

Narrative: Harry Brown is a retired Marine and a widower who lives on a dangerous housing estate in London. He lives a lonely life with only his best friend Leonard fir company. When Leonard has had enough of the kids on the estate so approaches a gang but is murdered. Harry feels he must take things into his own hands after the lack of support from the police. Harry becomes a vigilante on his estate and gets his vengeance.
Unique Selling Point: Stars Michael Caine; Highly loved and respected British actor who has a legendary reputation. Also the film is screening while Britain is struggling with Young people in council estates raising gun and knife crimes so many people will be able to relate to some of the characters.
Target Audience: The film is rated an 18, so its aimed at adults.
Music: Starts with slow and silent so you can hear the plot and to build tension the music is erry. But then a drum & bass song begins when the action starts which is also for publicity as the drum & bass song 'Chase & status - End Credits' is theme song of the film.
Shot Types/Camera Angles: The trailer begins with a close up on Harry Brown into a high angle shot looking onto the street where some youths are causing trouble. After that there is plenty of medium close ups of the actors confronting and conversing.

I have analysed the trailer for the film 'Sin Nombre'. This is what I found out;
Genre: Urban, Crime/Drama
Narrative: A story of a El Casper, a member of a very violent gang attempts to flee the country after accidental killing the gang leader. He meets a young lady also trying to leave the country. They travel together in hope to start a new life in America.
Unique Selling Point: Winning the Sundance film festival award for 'Excellence In Direction' and 'Excellence In Cinematography'.
Target Audience: The film is rated an 18, so its aimed at adults.
Music: Starts quite slow but when guns are shown more intense music begins. After this cultural instruments are played.
Shot Types/Camera Angles: Wide ranged usage of cameras from close ups to long shots.
Pace: Stays quite slow paced at the begining and end but is fast paced in the middle to emphasise the danger of the gang.
Dialogue: Dialogue by most cast members showing some the key moments of the plot to help audience understand the characters, what the film is about and get their interest.
Voice over: There is a voice over at the beginning to help the audience to understand the basic plot, promote the films respected executive producers and finally at the end for the film title.
Special Effects: A green screen might have been used for the dangerous scenes on the train.

Soundtrack Research

From my research i has learnt that the music is very important to trailers; especially urban films. My trailer need to have a song in the background as that is what all the urban films have. The song choice will be very important as its genre must fit the film, that is why I am going to research R&B, Grime and Hip-Hop as these are the usually the most popular genres of music in urban areas.

My questionaire results
So that i would receive a good range results I gave 20 people my questionnaire. To make my results fair i tried to keep my results fairly spread between age and gender.
My results will help me with choices i will make for my work such as 'What most attracts the audience to seeing a film?'. My results told me that its the reviews that most attract the audience so i will put many positive reviews in my trailer, poster & website.
